Description

“I wanna be the victim,
The aggressor,
And the respite,
And the stressor,
And the worse one,
Then the better.
I might as well be alone forever.”

We all carry so much in our heads—thoughts, feelings, memories—all jostling for space at the same time. In the decade since graduating from Goldsmiths, London, the artist and musician Issy Wood has created paintings that explore this mental and emotional overcrowding we try to manage daily. She has also written music and lyrics that express the emotional pressures we constantly live under: love, sex, control, dependence, independence, interdependence.

A selection of images, thoughts, memories, and musings are presented in her piece for King Kong. It’s a seeming jumble of carefully curated visuals that flick and flicker—distorted, disturbing, familiar, off-kilter, unsettling—yet the feelings they evoke are unmistakable.

There’s something valuable here—memories, ideas, shared emotions. Two thoughts to take away, perhaps to remember, offering a kind of assurance, reassurance, or philosophical insurance policy for life:

“Luck, if there’s no such thing as God.
God, if there’s no such thing as luck.”
